Note: As part of the Government of India’s major banking sector reforms aimed at strengthening public sector banks (PSBs), improving efficiency, and reducing non-performing assets (NPAs), a large-scale consolidation of banks was announced on 30 August 2019. Under this reform, 10 public sector banks were merged into 4 larger public sector banks, reducing the total number of PSBs from 27 in 2017 to 12 at present.

The major mergers were as follows:

  • Allahabad Bank was merged with Indian Bank.
  • Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank were merged with Union Bank of India, creating a stronger national-level bank.
  • Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India were merged with Punjab National Bank (PNB), making PNB one of the largest PSBs in the country.
  • Syndicate Bank was merged with Canara Bank, enhancing its operational reach.
  • Earlier, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank were merged with Bank of Baroda (effective from April 1, 2019), further consolidating the sector.

These mergers aimed to create globally competitive banks, enhance capital adequacy, improve credit availability, strengthen risk management, and support India’s long-term economic growth.
